Education
Education law is the portion of the law in a state, country or city that specifically governs educational bodies such as public and private schools and universities. When a parent does not think their child’s educational rights are being upheld, they may need to enlist the help of a lawyer who specializes in education law. Education law also covers university level education. If you think your educational rights have been compromised, an education lawyer may be able to help.
Environmental Law
Environmental law is the branch of law that regulates the impact of human activities on the environment. Environmental law covers a broad range of human activities that affect air, water, land, flora or fauna. Laws intended to protect animals typically fall under this category of law. If your city has toxins in it’s water supply or a factory near you is not operating up to safety codes and standards, you may need an environmental lawyer.
Estate
Estate law is the branch of law which deals with probate, trusts, and wills, and other areas that pertain to the management of someone’s property.
Family Law
Family law is the branch of law that deals with matters pertaining to families such as adoption, marriage, divorce, and child custody. If you are having legal issues that have to do with your family or starting one, you may find it helpful to discuss your situation with a family law lawyer.
Personal Injury
Personal injury law refers to the legal remedies and defenses involved in civil lawsuits brought as a result of wrongful conduct. When one or more parties’ negligence, recklessness or malice results in the injury of someone or in someone becoming ill, the injured party may be able to seek compensation through a personal injury claim. There are many different areas of personal injury law.
Medical Malpractice
Medical malpractice is a large area of personal injury law that pertains specifically to when a doctor, other healthcare provider, or a hospital’s negligence results in injury or illness for a patient. Medical malpractice claims typically involve a victim, or in some cases, the victim’s family, seeking compensation for expenses related to the injury or illness that was caused by the malpractice.
Premise Liability
Premise liability is a legal concept that typically comes into play in personal injury cases. When an injury is caused by an unsafe or defective condition on property because of the property owner’s, or in some cases, a tenant renter’s or property manager’s, negligence, they may be liable for expenses related to the victim’s injury.
Product Liability
Consumers in the United States are supposed to be protected from dangerous and faulty products. When a dangerous or defective product injures someone who has used it in accordance with its instructions and has adhered to its safety warnings, one or more party that made the product available to consumers may be liable for the victim’s injuries.
Tax
Tax law covers the laws, policies and rules that oversee the tax process. This process involves charges on estates, income, licenses, property, transactions, and more by the government. Not everyone needs a tax lawyer but for people with more complicated financial situations, they are often necessary.
Workers Compensation
When someone is injured while at work or becomes ill because of conditions at work, and in some cases, when someone gets injured on their way to work or while working off site, their employer may be liable for expenses related to their injury. A worker does not need to be injured while actually doing their job because if they are on the clock when the injury occured it may be considered work related. An example of this is an administrative assistant is on their way to the restroom and a heavy box that was precariously placed by a coworker, falls and injures them. This will likely be the company’s responsibility even though they may try to blame the co-worker.
These are just a few of the common practice areas of civil law. There are many areas that are not mentioned here.
